Who builds a list of auto repair shops

This page is for people who sell to this trade, not for people who need one.

Independent repair shops are sold to by parts distributors, by shop-management and diagnostic software, by equipment and lift suppliers, by extended-warranty and financing providers, and by marketing agencies. The word that matters in every one of those sales is independent — franchise locations buy through corporate, so a useful list is one with the chains taken out.

The lists sold for this purpose go stale the month they are compiled — businesses open, close, move and change owners constantly. A list you build yourself from Google Maps is current to the day you ran it, costs nothing on the free plan, and covers exactly the territory you asked for. The rest of this page is how.

How many auto repair shops there are

84,859 employer auto repair shops in the United States, 90% of them with fewer than ten employees.

That national figure is from the U.S. Census Bureau's County Business Patterns, which counts every business with at least one paid employee by industry and county. The share under ten employees matters more than the total: those are the independents who make their own purchasing decisions, and they are the majority of this trade.

The seven largest metros, from the same source, densest first. The full breakdown with national comparisons is on the how many auto repair shops are in the US page.

What a Google Maps listing tells you about a auto repair shop

The listing is a better prospecting signal than a purchased record, because it shows how the business presents itself right now.

The most useful thing a Google Maps listing tells you about a repair shop is whether it is a franchise. The name does most of the work — Midas, Meineke, Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys and the rest are recognisable — and the website domain does the rest, because a franchise location's site is on the corporate domain. Filter those out and what remains is the family-owned shop: usually a good reputation, usually a website that was built once years ago, and usually no one doing marketing, because the shop has been full since before the internet.

Filters that matter for auto repair shops

These are the columns worth sorting a list of this trade by. Each one is captured by the extension and exported alongside the contact data.

  1. Not a franchise

Exclude by name and by corporate domain. Everything left is an independent that makes its own purchasing decisions.

  2. Website on a free builder or years old

Independent shops often have a site, but it is frequently a decade old. The platform field from enrichment shows it.

  3. No owner reply to reviews

Repair-shop reviews include billing disputes. A shop that never replies has no one managing its reputation.

  4. Speciality from the category

Transmission, brakes, tyres, diesel, European — the Maps category tells a parts distributor which list to send.

How to build the list

Four steps, in your browser, on the free plan.

  1. Search Google Maps for "auto repair" in your territory

Any city, any radius. The extension reads whatever the map is showing, so the territory is whatever you searched.

  2. Run a scan

Local Scan takes the results on screen. Radius Scan sweeps an area around a point. Auto Scan works through a list of cities while you do something else.

  3. Enrich the results

The extension visits each business's website and profile to find a public email, an owner name, social profiles, and the signals the filters above depend on.

  4. Filter, then export

Sort by the filters that matter for auto repair shops, keep the rows worth contacting, and export to CSV, Excel, Google Sheets or JSON.

What you get for each business

Every row is a business from the map, with the contact and profile fields the enrichment pass could find.

From the listing

Present for every business.

  • Business name and category
  • Address, city, state
  • Phone number
  • Website, or whether one exists
  • Rating and review count
  • Google Maps URL and Place ID

From enrichment

Best-effort. Depends on what the business has published.

  • Public email address
  • Owner or decision-maker name
  • Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other profiles
  • Opening hours
  • Website platform and whether it has a contact form

Derived

Computed to help you sort a long list.

  • Days since the last review
  • Unanswered review count
  • Owner response rate
  • Google Business Profile completeness
  • Pain Score (0–10)

No tool can produce an email a business never published. Where enrichment looks and finds nothing, the export says so explicitly rather than leaving a blank — so a list of auto repair shops with a real email in every row is smaller than the full list, and that is the honest number.

Questions

Is this a auto repair shop email list I can download?
No. This page describes how to build one yourself from Google Maps using a free Chrome extension. That is deliberate: a list you build today is current today, and it covers your territory rather than a vendor's. A list you buy was compiled months ago for everyone.
How many of them will have an email address?
It varies by trade and by how the business presents itself online. Enrichment finds an email where the business has published one on its website or profile; where it has not, no tool can invent one. Expect a meaningful share of rows to have a phone and no email, and treat the phone as the contact for those.
Why is the count by county rather than by city?
Because that is the finest geography the Census publishes business counts at. The table above names the county — Harris County, not Houston — so the number describes what it actually measured. Two of the seven, Philadelphia and New York City, are coterminous with their counties, so there the city name is exact.
What does the free plan cover?
500 leads a month, 50 a day, and 250 enrichments a month, with no card required. That is enough to build a working list for one trade in one metro. Paid plans raise those limits; see pricing.
